In 1877 Italian masons used the silvery stone from the Appalachian Mountains to build a Victorian Gothic mansion in Chestnut Hill, now known as Silverstone Bed and Breakfast.
In the last
century, Chestnut Hill was
accessible only to the wealthiest Philadelphians, and a few hundred of
them built their impressive Italian Nearby Germantown Avenue, with its tiny family-run stores, cafes, and restaurants continues to attract visitors for walks and shopping. Valley Green, located nearby, is one of the largest natural parks in the United States. Here one can fish for trout and go horseback riding, hiking, or climbing along the cliffs above Wissahicken Creek. Chestnut Hill is still one of the nicest places to live on the East Coast.
